Q&A with Amanda

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

The Lion King or Cinderella

What is your favorite children's book?

One of my favorite children's books is "The Pout Pout Fish" because it was my daughter's favorite books as a toddler. I also enjoy "Ada Twist, Scientist" as it reminds me so much of my daughter's personality!

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My Little Pony
Beanie Babies

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My greatest inspiration is my mother. It wasn't until I became an adult and had children of my own that I truly understood the depth of a mother's love and sacrifice. Motherhood gave me a new appreciation for everything she did for our family and the countless ways she put her own needs and aspirations aside to support and care for me. Her unwavering love, strength, and selflessness continue to inspire me every day. I strive to embody those same qualities as a mother to my own children and in the compassionate care I provide to my patients and their families.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I enjoy vacationing with my family. We have an annual trip to Lake Powell. As a family, we enjoy cruising, exploring new places, and camping.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

My passion for working with children began at an early age. While I was in high school, I decided to pursue a career as a pediatric nurse after visiting a family friend at Rady Children's Hospital. Watching her nurses provide compassionate, skilled care and build meaningful connections with their young patients inspired me to follow a similar path. At the time, I never imagined that my career would continue to evolve, leading me to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I enjoy the challenges and opportunities for growth that this profession provides, and caring for children and their families has been far more rewarding than I ever could have imagined.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

Patients and their families have often told me that I am a good listener. I believe that taking the time to understand a patient's complete history is essential to developing an individualized and effective plan of care. I also make every effort to stay on schedule because I value and respect my patients' time.

I strive to treat every patient with compassion, respect, and fairness, providing the same level of care that I would want for my own family. Building trust is an important part of the patient-provider relationship, so I make an effort to establish a personal connection to help patients and their families feel comfortable and at ease during their visit.

When caring for younger children, I recognize that a medical office can be an intimidating environment. I work to create a safe, reassuring atmosphere by using age-appropriate communication and encouraging parents to remain actively involved during the examination. For children who are anxious or frightened, I often have them sit on a parent's lap during portions of the exam to provide comfort and security. My goal is to make every visit as positive and stress-free as possible for both the child and their family.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Growing up with a sister who has special needs has given me a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for the importance of compassionate, individualized care. This personal experience has helped me connect with patients with special needs and their families with greater understanding and empathy. I believe every patient deserves to be treated with the same dignity, respect, and attention, regardless of their abilities. During visits, I make a point to engage directly with each patient by making eye contact, speaking to them even if they are nonverbal, and getting down to their level whenever possible. My goal is to ensure that every patient feels seen, valued, and included in their care.
